DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

Updated: Mar 13, 2022

Nature has so much to offer and we can learn so much from it.Over the years,we've borrowed several items from nature;material, colour textures and this list can go on and on and on. In fact, the natural environment has provided so much information in terms of how to tackle challenges within the built environment that there is a term for it;bio-mimicry.

However, how do you identify what to pick? How do you know where to look?and how do you eventually use it in your work?

1.what is the problem in hand?

The first thing you want to do is to determine what exactly the task is.What problem exactly are you seeking to solve? After all ,design is about problem solving (existing and those that might occure in future)

So once you discover the problem you want to solve, then look at natures element that sort of undergoes a similar problem. For example, you are having a challenge in terms of selection of a natural colour pallet,or how to combine natural textures and so on.

2.How do you know where to look?

Now,as much as you've already identified what your problem is and sort of have an idea of where to look, you have to careful not to overwhelm yourself, what you want to do,is to narrow down to what is relevant to you. For instance,I've identified ways in which nature combines different textures in several ways, now what do i focus on?This is where you consider other factors affecting your design and eliminate using logic. What you want to do is ask questions such as what is the clients preference?whats available locally?what can be done by the contractor? is it within budget?

These questions will help you narrow down, you may end up with even just one..or a number you can work with.

3.How do you eventually use it in your work?

So you've identified what you want and you have your inspiration ready, then what?

What you need to do next is to pick out design elements within the piece you have. You need to pick out the elements of design and the ordering principles of design.(there's a post on this).Once you've done this you'll be able to come up with a harmonious design;inspired by nature.
